A day of volunteer service

The crew of Living Lands and Waters have spent the last several weeks with their fleet of barges stationed on the Ohio River in our area, as their group, along with volunteers from the local community accompany them on sweeps to clean the banks of the river of trash.

From old tires to plastic bottles, these clean up crews have gathered the waste and taken it back to the group’s barge for recycling.

Last week, they got an assist from students at a Lawrence County school, when two classes of senior chemistry students from Dawson-Bryant High spent the day working with the group.

In addition to the cleanup, they also spent time on the barge that serves as housing for the group, where they were given an education in sustainability and taught about water quality.

We commend these students for starting the school year with a day of volunteerism and are thankful for all of the work Living Lands and Waters have put in around our region.

As the students testified, their work has made an impression on many in the area and we hope this will inspire our community to do their best to keep the Ohio clean.
