Support for those who served

On Thursday was the second annual Giving Back to Veterans Day in Ironton.

The event features numerous organizations dedicated to helping veterans find the resources they need.

There were six divisions from the VA, the Lawrence County Veterans Services office, the DAV, Ohio University Southern and many more.

While there are many places for veterans to get help, the goal is for these agencies to get into a single place so veterans can get the benefits they are entitled to that they may  not now about.

And it worked in at least one case.

Lawrence County Veterans Services officer Tim Carpenter said they were able to get a homeless couple into a shelter and get them in contact with a homeless coordinator so they can get housing assistance.

Carpenter said that many times veterans might not need the services but pass the information along to another veteran who does.

We commend Kim Maynard for organizing the event for the past two years.

She says she is already talking to other organizations about making it even bigger next year.

We support this effort of helping our local veterans and hope that it gets bigger and helps more people every year.
