A lasting tribute to service

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed the National Veterans Memorial and Museum Act into law.

This legislation was introduced and pushed heavily by Ohio’s two U.S. senators, Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican Rob Portman, and companion legislation was also introduced by a bipartisan group of members of Ohio’s delegation in the House of Representatives.

The act will congressionally designate the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus.

The designation comes to the existing memorial, which has been under construction since 2015 and expected to open in the fall. Its aims have been to honor the contributions of Ohioans through military service, to connect civilians with veterans and their military experience and educate schoolchildren about the history and value of service.

In addition, the museum, which will now have a national focus, will host regular events for active duty military veterans, including homecoming after their tours of duty.

We are thankful for service members and are proud that Ohio’s delegation and members of both parties to could come together to get this legislation passed and signed into law by the president.

May this memorial stand as a reminder of the sacrifices our military have made in service to their country.
