Serving our region and state

On Wednesday, it Rep. Ryan Smith, R-93, was elected as speaker for the Ohio House of Representatives.

Smith, of Gallia County, represents a district that covers most of Lawrence County.

Smith’s election should be a cause of optimism for citizens here, as it will provide much-needed representation for the southern part of the state in the leadership in Columbus.

With a small population, compared to other counties, Lawrence County and the surrounding area are often overlooked by politicians in the capitol.

Having Smith in the top role in the chamber could ensure that issues important to southern Ohio will get a strong focus.

Smith most recently delivered for the area when it was announced earlier this year that he had secured $1 million in funding to build a new senior center and EMS station at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.

He had worked with local leaders and county commissioners, particularly Freddie Hayes Jr., in getting the funding.

Smith has shown that he takes notice of concerns in Lawrence County and has demonstrated a good working relationship with our officials here.

We congratulate him on his new position and hope he will serve the county, and the state, well.
