Congrats for a year of honors

The academic year has wrapped up for Lawrence County and students are off to enjoy a few months at home with their families.
We would like to take the next two days to offer stars to Lawrence County students for some of their achievments in 2017-2018.

• To Chesapeake Elementary, who under principal Trisha Harris, was named an Ohio School of Honor and cited with a High Progress distinction, thanks to gains in reading and math proficiency.

• To four spellers: Danielle Leonard, of Ironton Elementary, who was among four Lawrence County students to compete in the regional spelling bee in Athens and came in fifth place. Also taking part in the competition at Ohio University were John Tyler,of Chesapeake Middle, who came in fourth, Hanna McKenzie, of South Point Middle, and Emily Ferguson, of Fairland West Elementary, who also won the county bee in December.

• To Chesapeake Middle School, whose students swept the county science fair. Zoey Schmidt took best overall, followed by Dawson Forbush in second place and Alison Plantz in third. In all, 14 students from Lawrence County received a superior raring and went on to eligibility for the state fair.

• To Johnathan Miller, of Ironton Middle School, who was selected as a recipient of the R.A. Horn Award. Miller, who is diagnosed with autism, was selected for the honor, which goes to students with disabilities who excel at learning.

• To Bindi Staley, of South Point Elementary, who took her love of sign language and launched a club at her school in which she educated fellow students on the form of communication.
