A community works together

This past week, a local contractor and vocational students from Collins Career Technical center have been hard at work at South Point Elementary working to construct a new reading pavilion for the school.
The $5,000 structure was mostly paid for with a grant from Lowe’s, following an application by the school’s administrative assistant Bill Christian, and will serve students and faculty with multiple uses.
Delivery of the materials for the project was provided, free of charge by Lowe’s of South Point, while local contractor Drew Gibson, of Superior Handyman and Remodeling, has volunteered his time to work on the structure and oversee its completion.

Gibson is being assisted on the project by about 30 students from CCTC, under direction of teacher Matt Parnell, working as both a community service project and toward the school’s curriculum.
Lastly, the roofing for the pavilion will be provided by Shield Roofing, also free of charge.
This project serves as a shining of example of what the community can do and a reminder of how willing people are to contribute to a good cause.
All involved in this effort should be applauded for their work to provide better facilities to area students.
