COAL GROVE — To error is human. To commit 11 errors, well that seems sort of inhuman.
The Coal Grove Hornets were guilty of 11 — count ‘em — errors in an 11-4 loss to the Gallipolis Blue Devils in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
“Jeb (Jones) really pitched a good game, but we just had one of those games. You can’t make errors and win and you’re certainly not going to win with 11 errors,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.
Gallipolis (11-5, 8-3) got a run in the first, three in the third and one in the fourth to lead 5-0.
Coal Grove (10-5, 7-4) got a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Dylan Malone singled and Darin Bloomfield reached on a error to put runners on the corners. Bloomfield stole second and Malone came home on the throw.
The Hornets were guilty of four errors in the seventh inning as Gallipolis scored six times.
The Hornets didn’t quit as they scored three in the bottom of the inning.
Nate Harmon was safe on an error, Zach Landers and Chase McKnight walked and Daniel Rutherford reached on a fielder’s choice as a run scored.
After a double steal, Jones reached on an error as two runs scored.
Malone was 2-4 as the Hornets got five hits.
Gallipolis had six hits as John Stout, Brody Thomas and Braden Simms each went 2-4.
On Wednesday, Coal Grove hosts Fairland and Gallipolis visits Chesapeake.
