SOUTH POINT — Mark Goodall was appointed fire chief of the Village of South Point during Tuesday night’s monthly council meeting. The fire department has been without a chief since Richard Stevens resigned effective March 31.
Goodall, as assistant fire chief has led the fire department in the absence of a chief, was considered along with two other candidates for the position.
“After much consideration, I’ve chosen to appoint Mark Goodall as the fire chief for the Village of South Point,” Mayor Ron West said during Tuesday’s meeting. He said he didn’t know Goodall very well before working with him over the past few months, but that they have worked well together during this time.
“I think it’s the right thing to do at this time,” West said. He added that he had three resumes to consider, and his decision was not from pressure from anyone speaking for the fire department.
“It was my own decision,” he said. I think he’ll do an excellent job. He’s well experienced with the fire department.”
Goodall, who has been with the South Point Volunteer Fire Department for the past 14 years and has served as assistant chief for the past several years, is pleased with his appointment as chief.
“I’m honored to accept the position of fire chief for the Village of South Point. I will try to make this a safe place for our community,” Goodall said. “We’re going to do some things to make some changes to the department for the good.
“I respect all my officers and firefighters at the Village of South Point Fire Department and we have one of the best fire departments in Lawrence County,” Goodall added.
“I love the fire department. I love being there,” he said. “When a call comes in, I get to the station to help protect the community.”
