Five bucks doesn’t buy a lot these days, but on Feb. 12, for just that amount the Ironton Rotary Club will serve up some pancakes, sausage and beverages along with some socialization and a feeling of pride for helping out a good cause.

Pancake Day will be from 7 a.m. until noon at the AEP Building at 525 S. Third St. in Ironton.

Don Edwards, known along with Dr. Dick Thompson as “the batter makers,” said the Rotary Club has been hosting the annual pancake breakfast since the 1970s. The event draws quite a crowd.

“We’ll have 350 or 400 people there eating pancakes on that Saturday morning,” Edwards said. “A lot of people look forward to having it because they can meet and visit with people they haven’t seen in a while and also have a good breakfast.”

Tickets can be purchased from a Rotarian or at the door.

The money taken in from the event is used to support the club’s service projects.

“We do it to raise funds, to support our community activities such as nurses’ scholarship and others,” Edwards said.

Edwards said the Rotary Club has been in Ironton since around 1924.

“Rotary is an organization of men and women that work to make our community better and it’s a worldwide organization,” he said.

The club meets on Wednesdays at noon to eat and talk and listen to speakers come in and educate them on topics.

Some of the projects the club has been responsible for recently, in addition to the nursing scholarships, are organizing Halloween and Christmas parades, helping to beautify the fountain area on Third and Center streets in downtown Ironton and helping to fund a new library in Central America.
