MINFORD — “When I was a young boy
Living in the city
All I did was
Run, run, run, run, run”
Chesapeake football might not have been the inspiration for this OneRebulic song entitled “Run,” since it’s 3 years old, but the song might have inspired the Panthers.
The Panthers put on their running shoes as they raced past the Minford Falcons 42-0 Friday in a non-league game.
Chesapeake (2-0) ran 37 times for 330 of their 363 total yards with both Drew Plantz and Kaden Perkins eclipsing the 100 yardage.
Plantz ran 11 times for 122 yards and 3 touchdowns while Perkins carried 12 times for 108 yards and a score. Plantz also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Jacob Harris who picked up 74 yards rushing himself and scored a touchdown.
The Panthers defense made Minford’s running game reflect the song “Walk, Don’t Run” as the Falcons managed just 52 yards on 19 carries with quarterback Curtis Glenn getting 48 net yards on 10 attempts. Glenn got 46 of his yards on Minford’s final possession of the game.
Glenn did complete 11-of-18 passes for 142 yards but was intercepted 3 times. Colt Donahoe had 68 yards on 4 receptions.
After forcing a punt to start the game, the Panthers went 66 yards in just 4 plays thanks mainly to a 39-yard run by Plantz who also went the final 5 yards for the score.
Perkins ran for the conversion and it was 8-0 at the 8:18 mark.
The Panthers offense kicked into high gear in the second quarter with 21 points.
In a drive that began at the 41-yard line in the first quarter, the Panthers scored in 6 plays with Plantz again going 5 yards for the score and he ran for the conversion and a 16-0 lead with 11:20 on the clock.
Minford (0-2) failed to convert a fourth down play at the Panthers’ 26 and 6 plays later Plantz bolted 42 yards for the score and it was 22-0 with 4:47 left in the half.
An interception by Ethan Kerns put the Panthers back in business at the Minford 42. A Harris to Plantz 13-yard pass 5 plays into the drive pushed the lead to 29-0 after Logan Diamond’s kick.
Chesapeake took the second half kickoff and marched 61 yards in just 5 plays with a 30-yard run by Harris setting up his own 14-yard scoring run.
Lily Helmstetler kicked the conversion and the lead was 36-0 with 9:16 on the third quarter clock.
An interception by Andrew Daniels gave the Panthers the ball at their own 38.
This time the drive used 11 plays on the running clock and Perkins scored from 5 yards out with 7:15 to play.
Minford drove to the Chesapeake 27 behind the running of Glenn, but an interception by Andrew Isaacs in the end zone halted the threat.
The Panthers ran one play as time expired.
Chesapeake will host Racine Southern this Friday.
