COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets may not have been feeling well, but they left the Rock Hill Redwomen feeling sick.
Despite injuries and illness, Coal Grove rallied from a first quarter deficit to beat the Redwomen 59-40 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
“I could have started a hospital ward this week. We have had six players hurt or sick at some point during the week,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach whose team was missing starter Ellie Holmes.
Addi Dillow scored a game-high 6 points as Coal Grove (12-4, 10-0) remained unbeaten and atop the OVC. Kaleigh Murphy added 10 points.
Lucy Simpson scored 14 points and MaKayla Scott scored 10 for Rock Hill (3-12, 0-10).
Rock Hill flirted with the idea of an upset as Scott and Simpson scored 6 points each and Savannah Cade hit a 3-pointer to take an 18-16 first quarter lead.
Dillow scored 8 points for Coal Grove in the quarter.
Rock Hill had only two baskets in the second quarter and the Lady Hornets took advantage as Dillow — who had 5 points in the quarter — and Caitlin Dillon each hit 3-pointers to close the half as they took a 31-22 halftime lead.
Dillow hit two more 3-pointers, Dillon had another and Murphy scored 4 points as Coal Grove outscored Rock Hill 17-6 to open up a 48-28 lead.
“At halftime, we discussed a few offensive changes we wanted to make. More importantly, we talked about rebounding,” said Roach.
“All of my post players stepped up to the challenge and came down with a lot in the third and that got our guards in position to run the court and score in transition.”
Dillow scored 7 points in the fourth quarter to offset 4 points by Simpson and another triple by Cade.
Next Thursday, Coal Grove host Chesapeake and Rock Hill visits Portsmouth.
