WILLOW WOOD — Meatloaf once sang, “Now don’t be sad, ’cause two out of three ain’t bad”.
But unfortunately for Symmes Valley, three out of four turned out to be bad.
The Lady Vikings played tough in the first, third and fourth quarters. However, it was a bad second quarter that spelled doom as the South Gallia Lady Rebels posted a 43-34 win on Monday night in a Southern Ohio Conference 2 showdown.
The Lady Vikings (4-10, 2-1 SOCII) were led in scoring by Lydia Saunders and Kaitlin Maynard who both finished with 10 points. Maynard would finish with a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds.
Kaylee Maynard and Aly Haydon both scored 6, and Brenna Tibbs chipped in 2. Maynard finished with 9 boards and an assist.
Symmes Valley played even in the first, getting 5 points from Kaylee Maynard and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Aly Haydon to make the score 10-10 after one.
Then the second quarter came.
The Lady Rebels took control by putting together a 15-2 run to open up a double-digit lead.
During the scoring run, Jacie Boothe hit two-straight from behind the arc and Emma Clary scored 5 of her 7 points in the quarter.
When Sydni Hornsby knocked down a jumper from the foul line, the score had ballooned to 25-12 with 2:40 left before halftime.
Clary capped off the half with a layup off a spin move at the foul line to make the score 27-17 at the break.
Kaitlin Maynard scored 4 points to lead the Lady Vikings in the second.
South Gallia would come out of the locker room and build up a 36-22 lead behind 3-point goals from Boothe and Clary.
The Lady Vikings would chip away at the deficit with an 8-2 run to close out the final 3:47 of the quarter.
Kaitlin Maynard would spark the scoring run with a couple free throws, then Saunders later contributed with a free throw and a driving layup. Brenna Tibbs’ layup off an assist from Haydon would cut the score to 38-30 after three quarters.
Kaitlin Maynard would get the Lady Vikings closer, when she came up with a loose ball under the basket and laid it in to make it 38-32 just 50 seconds into the final frame.
But another triple from Boothe on the other end would push the Lady Rebels’ lead back out to 9.
Saunders would sink two more shots from the charity stripe to get the Lady Vikings within 7.
But Symmes Valley would be unable to score anymore the rest of the way and South Gallia would run clock on the offensive end to preserve the win.
The Lady Rebels were led in scoring by Boothe who finished with 18 points. Emma Clary registered 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
