Smith’s record-setting game gives Vikings win over Bobcats

SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers seemed to be running steady with the Portsmouth Trojans until their offense ran out of gas.

The Pointers lost a 2-point lead in the fourth quarter as they managed just 9 points and fell 55-45 on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Brayden Hanshaw had a 3-pointer and scored 7 of the Pointers’ total as they took a 9-7 first quarter lead.

Connie Thomas hit a trey and scored 5 points for Portsmouth (5-6, 3-2).

The Trojans came back to tie the game at 22-all in the second quarter as Dae’quan Woods had a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points while Thomas added 3 more.

Hanshaw again had 7 points including a 3-pointer while Ethan Layne added 4 points.

South Point (3-6, 2-4) regained the lead at 36-34 at the end of the third quarter as Layne scored 5 points as he and Ethan Hunt each hit 3-pointers.

Thomas scored 6 points and Malachi Loper 4 points for the Trojans.

Portsmouth then pulled away in the fourth quarter as Jayden Brewer hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 s with Thomas and Loper scoring 5 each and Woods adding 4 more.

The Pointers struggled in the quarter as Layne scored 5 points while Hanshaw and Evans got 2 each.

Hanshaw scored 19 points to lead the Pointers while Ethan Layne had 16 points.

Thomas scored 19 points, Woods 14 and Loper 13 for the Trojans.
