Mark your calendar, those of you who have half empty paint cans, used antifreeze, old prescription medication and other items deemed hazardous household waste.

The sixth annual Lawrence Scioto Solid Waste Management District’s Household Hazardous Waste Event will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Dow Chemical plant in Haverhill.

The idea behind the event is to give residents of the two counties a proper place to dispose of unwanted items that should not be sent to a regular landfill. Again this year, the event is co-sponsored by Dow, Americas Styrenics and Veolia Environmental Services.

Last year 176 vehicles went through the waste collection route. Among the items deposited were more than 900 scrap tires, 24 batteries, 1,000 pounds of oil, 10,000 pounds of latex paint, 60 propane tanks, 2,000 pounds of flammable liquids, 1,000 pounds of toxic liquids and 250 pounds of medicines.

Items accepted include scrap tires with a limit of six per person; lead-acid batteries, motor oil, brake fluid, used antifreeze, paint, thinners solvents, cleaners with acid or lye, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and computers.

Items not accepted include explosives, trash, ammunition, needles or syringes, yard waste, heating oil tanks, fuel tanks and appliances.

Items should be brought in sturdy boxes; containers must be left.

The event is open only to residents of Lawrence and Scioto counties and proof of residency is required.
