WEST UNION — Fairland coach John McClung can count on one hand the reasons why his Dragons beat the West Union Dragons 69-61 Friday in the season opener.

Those five reasons are: Tyler Godby, Zach Jordan, Cole Hatfield, Chris Ward and Adam Berry.

All five players were in double figures as the Dragons gave McClung a win in the first game of his second stint as the head coach.

Godby led the balanced offense with 14 points to go with seven rebounds. Jordan had 13 points, Hatfield 12 points and seven assists, Berry 10 points and six rebounds, and Ward also had 10 points.

Although the 26-for-65 field goal shooting and 11-for-23 from the foul line wasn’t what they wanted, there was another reason for Fairland’s win. The defense created 23 turnovers.

“We didn’t shoot it well, but we forced a lot of turnovers,” said McClung. “It was a crazy looking game. When you’ve got five guys scoring in double figures, it’s hard to beat.”

Jordan hit three trifectas and Berry scored six points in the first quarter as Fairland went up 23-20. Ward had six points and Hatfield five more as the lead went to 46-36 at the break.

“We had an opportunity to extend the lead in the second quarter and we did. We had a good second quarter,” said McClung.

The lead was 61-51 after three quarters and Fairland converted five free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

Drew Bare led West Union with 23 points.
