It was called the West Virginia Hoops Classic. The South Point Pointers lived up to the name.

The Pointers gave a classic performance as they upset the Westside Renegades 59-56 in overtime Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center.

“We played well at times, but we had some breakdowns,” said Pointers coach Gary Norris. “But we got to play in a big place and we battled hard and beat a good team.”

Chase Kratzenberg scored 16 points to lead three Pointers in double figures. Drew Lynd had 15 points and Ethan Prater had 11.

Eric Bailey had 23 points for Westside (0-1). Jonathan Cline added 11 points.

The game was tied at 12-12 at the end of the first quarter. Westside then took a scant 24-23 halftime lead.

The Renegades only outscored the Pointers 13-12 in the third quarter to lead 37-35, but Norris said it could have been worse.

“We couldn’t get some shots to drop in the third quarter. We had good looks but we couldn’t get anything to go. Westside is a big, strong, physical team. We knew what we were up against,” said Norris.

Kratzenberg scored seven in the fourth quarter as the Pointers (3-1) tied the game at 51-51 and forced the overtime.

Lynd hit a key basket and Jordan Fletcher made a pair of free throws to put South Point up by three points in the overtime.
