Chesapeake nips Redmen

Winning ugly beats losing pretty. Just ask the Chesapeake Panthers.

In a low-scoring affair, the Panthers got past the Rock Hill Redmen 41-35 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We did not shoot well and we didn’t play well, but we won. It wasn’t pretty,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis. “Rock Hill did a great job. They controlled the tempo.”

Rock Hill coach Adam Simpson said his team didn’t mind how the game looked. They just wanted to see a win.

“It was ugly, but that’s kind of what we wanted. The 23 turnovers did us in,” said Redmen coach Adam Simpson. “We had our chances.”

The Panthers led 10-5 at the end of the first quarter. Dustin Chandler and Brandon Klaiber combined for five points in the second quarter as the Redmen cut the deficit to 17-14. Trent Saunders had six of the Panthers’ points.

Klaiber scored six points and Chandler four in the third quarter as the Redmen got within 29-26. Kyle Webb scored five to keep Chesapeake in front.

Webb scored eight points and Nathan Copley hit a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter as Chesapeake outscored the Redmen 13-9.

Klaiber had four points and Luke Simpson knocked down a trey as Rock Hill took a 35-34 lead with 3:30 to play, but the Panthers’ defense did not allow the Redmen to score the rest of the way as they rallied to win.

“We missed a couple of layups and then we lost our point guard to fouls and that hurt us,” said Simpson. “We played well, we just couldn’t get a score when we had to and Chesapeake made the plays.”

Webb had a game-high 16 points for the Panthers (2-1, 1-0) while Saunders had 12 points, 13 rebounds and six steals.

Klaiber led the Redmen (1-3, 1-1) with 14 points and Chandler had 10 points and five rebounds. Sam Cooke grabbed nine rebounds.
