CHESAPEAKE — Mother Nature may not be behaving, but the crazy and rough winter weather hasn’t deterred the spirit of some concerned residents of the Village of Chesapeake.

They have gotten together to help one of their own, even Facebook and My Space are getting into the act. It’s all done for an elderly woman who earlier this month lost everything she had in a fire.

Now tonight between 5 and 7, those helping will get a chance to meet “Miss Mildred,” at a special party being held for her benefit.

Last week American Health Center in Chesapeake started collecting clothes and household items for “Miss Mildred,” the 71-year-old, whose apartment and all her possessions were destroyed in the Jan. 5 fire that broke out at the Deeds Family Vision Clinic on County Road 1.

“She has lost everything, her daughter told me,” Linda Adkins, manager of the center, said in an interview last week.

Adkins was told “Miss Mildred” was in need of a warm coat, clothing, boots, pots and pans, a toaster, silverware, blankets and sheets. Basically, everything needed in a home.

That call went out and people in the area have responded bringing in a variety of items for the woman.

“We are getting a good response, anything you could think of,” Nicholas Branham of the center, said. “Jackets, sweaters, blankets, kitchenware. … people have a lot of stuff they don’t need.”

Even a client of the center put in requests on Facebook and MySpace accounts.

Those who donate will get a coupon for a free exam and X-ray, plus at the party there will be raffle for a pocketbook as well as giveaways, such as a three-month gym membership, a massage and hydrotherapy package, Adkins said.

Donations will be taken until 8 p.m. tonight.

“Somebody in our community has donated furniture. Somebody will donate a sewing machine and one person said they would donate a microwave,” Adkins said. “I think it will be blessing to her.”
