Blair’s last-second shot caps Flyers’ comeback win

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Payton Blair did.

Blair missed a 3-point attempt with time running down and the St. Joseph Flyers trailing the New Boston Tigers 58-57.

But Joseph Unger got the offensive rebound, passed to Caleb Blackburn at the foul line who kicked the ball to Blair still standing at the left wing.

Blair launched a second attempt and connected with eight seconds left to give the Flyers a thrilling 60-58 come-from-behind win on Monday.

“That was a big win for our guys. We didn’t shoot the ball well, but we hit some crucial shots and we did the little things you have to do to win on the road,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan.

“Caleb Blackburn took two charges in third quarter that were huge momentum changers and Joey Basedow did a heck of a job on (Michael) Salisbury.”

Blackburn had converted a three-point play earlier that gave the Flyers a 57-56 lead. A layup by Josh Tyler’s put New Boston back in front 58-57 with 20 seconds to go.

New Boston’s defense double teamed the Flyers’ leading scorer Chad Harvey and left the sophomore Blair free to take the final shot.

And he did.

New Boston was 6-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line in the first quarter as they went ahead 19-10. Harvey had seven of St. Joseph’s points.

The lead was 33-15 in the third quarter before the Flyers battle back to within 38-25 at the break.

“We told them at halftime that if we’re going to win, we have to hold them to 20 points in the second half. If they get to 60, we’d be in trouble,” said Sheridan.

Harvey hit a basket and Blair hit one of his three trifectas in the quarter to tie the game at 42-42 with 2:05 left in the third quarter. St. Joseph outscored New Boston 18-4 in the quarter to lead 43-42.

New Boston was up 56-54 with 1:09 left when Blackburn made his three-point play and set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Blair finished with 21 points and Harvey — who sat out part of the game in foul trouble – scored 19 as St. Joseph improved to 9-8.

New Boston was led by Salisbury with 15 but only six in the second half. Tyler added 11 points.

The Flyers play at Portsmouth Notre Dame on Wednesdsay.
