Pointers rally with big second half

In the movie “Talladega Nights,” the question was asked, “Who wants to go fast?”

The South Point Pointers answered affirmative to that question Wednesday night as they took control of the game’s tempo and then the game in a 60-55 come-from-behind win over the Federal Hocking Lancers in the Division III sectional tournament.

The Pointers trailed most of the second quarter and they were down by as many as 11 points in the third quarter before using their pressure to cause the Lancers to commit 13 of their 15 turnovers in the second half.

“In the second half everybody we had played hard. We seemed more committed,” said Pointers’ coach Gary Norris.

“Federal Hocking wanted to slow the pace down and they did in the first half. We were committed to make it go faster.”

Norris said part of South Point’s problems revolved around 10-of-27 shooting in the first half including 2-of-11 from beyond the 3-point arc.

“(Federal Hocking) played hard. We stood around, but that was probably coupled by not being able to score. They took advantage of it,” said Norris.

South Point (12-8) led most of the first quarter, but the lead changed hands five times early in the second quarter and the Lancers used a 3-pointer and a 12-footer by Grant Smith to take a 29-22 lead.

Matt Button made two foul shots for the Pointers with 50 seconds left in the half to make it 31-24. Ryan Rex hit the first of two free throws as the Lancers took a 32-24 halftime lead.

A 3-point goal by Brendan Torrence with 4:02 left in the third quarter gave the Lancers a 39-28 lead.

But the Pointers got two baskets from Jordan Fletcher and a trey from Kyle Winkler to get within 39-33.

A triple by Kevin Davis cut the deficit to 40-38 and the Pointers ran off seven unanswered points to end the quarter to take a 45-42 lead.

“When they went up by 11, I told our coaches if they go up by 15 it would be really difficult to come back,” said Norris.

But the Pointers did come back.

“We scored in a flurry at the end of the third quarter,” said Norris.

A layup by Fletcher and a triple from Chase Kratzenberg extended the lead to 50-42.

Federal Hocking got within 57-53 with 36 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Dewayne Clark only to have the Pointers’ Kyle Winkler converted 3-of-4 foul shots over the final 20 seconds to seal the win.

Kratzenberg led the Pointers with 15 points but left with 1:22 to play after injuring his knee. His status is uncertain for Saturday’s sectional title game against Ironton.

Fletcher finished with 10 points while Cody Taylor and Winkler added nine each.

Smith and Tyler Thompson had 15 points each for the Lancers.
