Gus Macker organizers appreciate community

The Ironton Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament finished its 5th year with another successful event held on June 6 and 7. We are able to enjoy this success only because of the sponsorship and volunteer support we receive from our community.
In addition to the 222 teams of players participating in this year’s tournament, the Friends of Ironton organization would like to thank the almost 200 volunteers who made this event possible.
Also, we must thank the City of Ironton for being our host city and accommodating our needs for an event this size, our financial sponsors and local businesses for the contributions they make to the Ironton Gus Macker and for the cooperation of downtown merchants and residents for any inconvenience it may cause for them.
As much as we would like to recognize every volunteer and sponsor involved with the Macker, it is almost impossible to do so without leaving someone out.
This year, however, I would like to thank a few people for their efforts in making this year’s Macker tournament even more special.
Dean McDonald, Gus Macker committee member; Jim Robinson, Open Door School; and, Josh Tackett with Tri-State Industries, all worked together to provide a tournament division for persons with developmental disabilities. There were more than 30 participants ages 13 to 40 years old.
The games were held on Dream Court, which is a specialized court with play-by-play announcements and lots of individual player recognition.
It was great!
We believe the Ironton Gus Macker has become a source of civic pride for our community. This year, we were especially proud of our volunteers who made the effort to include a group of basketball players who love the game as much as we do.
