MEMPHIS — Darius Marshall must like breaking records.
After setting a personal career-high rushing record last week against Bowling Green, Marshall broke it Saturday against Memphis as he ran 25 times for 203 yards and three touchdowns as the Marshall Thundering Herd beat the Tigers 27-16.
The Herd (3-1,1-0) took a 3-0 lead on a 36-yard field goal by Craig Ratanamorn only to have Memphis take a 7-3 lead when Duke Calhoun scored on an 80-yard screen play.
But Marshall took over with touchdown runs of 2 and 69 yards in the second quarter to put the Herd ahead 17-7 with 2:48 left.
Matt Reagan kicked a 20-yard field goal as time expired to get Memphis within 17-10 at the half.
A 22-yard field goal by Reagan in the third quarter made it a 17-13 game, but a 52-yard punt return by Andre Booker set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Marshall to open the fourth quarter and extend the lead to 24-13.
Reagan had a 25-yard field goal but Ratanamorn sealed the win with an 18-yarder of his own with 1:56 to play that capped a 59-yard, 10-play drive.
The Herd controlled the game with its running game. With 41 rushes for 243 yards, they had the ball for 33:09 compared to 26:51 for Memphis.
