CHESAPEAKE — Kayla Fletcher had one last softball game to enjoy, so she jammed everything she could into it.

Fletcher closed out her career by hitting for the cycle, stealing a base and driving in five runs as the South Point Lady Pointers beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 12-1 Saturday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Kayla definitely ended her softball career perfectly,” said South Point coach Tara Layne.

Fletcher and three other seniors — Ashley Goodall, Katelynn Leonard, Tedi Miller — thought they had lost their final game when they were beaten by Eastern Brown in the district semifinals.

“I just told our seniors that unless a team wins the state championship, every senior’s last game is always going to be a loss,” said Layne.

“Lucky for us we have a make-up game and a chance to end the season on a great note and to get one final win.”

Fletcher went 4-4 as she got a single, double, triple and a home run. Goodall was 1-3, Miller 1-2 with an RBI and Leonard 1-4 as the Lady Pointers had 10 hits.

Rachel Murnahan got the win as she struck out three, did not walk a batter and scattered seven hits. She also drilled a home run and drove in two runs.

Fletcher tripled on the first pitch of the game and scored when Goodall grounded out to put the Lady Pointers up 1-0 in the first inning.

Chesapeake tied the game in the third inning on two-out doubles by Sarah Rice and Caitlin Heffner.

But South Point answered with five runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth inning to put the game away.

In the fourth, Goodall was hit by a pitch and Andrea Kleinman doubled her home. Kaitlyn Brown followed with an RBI single.

Hannah Carey and Brianna Whaley walked to load the bases, Miller grounded out as a run scored and Fletcher doubled in the final two runs.

Goodall singled and Murnahan hit her first career home run to ignite the six-run fifth.

Brown and Whaley both walked and Miller singled to make it 9-1. Fletcher then capped the rally with her first career home run as she drilled a pitch over the fence in right-center field.

South Point finished 15-4 and second in the OVC at 8-2.
