Lady Hornets rally from early deficit for key OVC win

In a game that saw no scoring, one team scoring some runs and then the other team doing a lot scoring, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets rallied from an early deficit to beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 11-4 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The game was scoreless for 2 innings and then Ironton (9-3, 5-2) put 3 on the scoreboard in the third.

Layla Townsend walked, Khamil Martin singled and Aubrey Ferguson walked to load the bases. An out later, Miley Bias doubled into the left-center field gap to clear the bases.

Coal Grove (7-4, 4-1) came back to get 2 runs in the fourth inning as Rylee Black got a leadoff home run and then Mia Haynes walked, Braelie Hitchcock was hit by a pitch and Kendall Taylor reached on an error.

The Lady Hornets tied the game in the fifth on a double by Black, Rylee Bare’s single and an error.

Coal Grove took the lead with 3 runs in the sixth.

Kasey Vanderhoof led off with a double, Hitchcock walked, Brianna Malone was hit by a pitch and Deeds had an RBI single. Black and Bare were hit by pitches forcing home runs.

The Lady Hornets put the game out of reach with 5 runs in the seventh.

Vanderhoof doubled, Hitchcock singled, Deeds walked and Izzy Kitts singled for 2 runs. Black and Bare both reached on errors to score the other 3 runs.

Ironton added a run in the bottom of the inning as Townsend walked, Martin hit into a force play, Ferguson singled and Townsend scored on the throw back into the infield.

Deeds got the complete game win as she gave up only 4 hits, 3 earned runs with 16 strikeouts and 6 walks.

Black was 2-4 with a home run, a double and an RBI and Vanderhoof 2-4 with 2 doubles to lead Coal Grove’s 8-hit attack.

Bias was 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI for Ironton.
