Staff report

Ohio University Southern, in partnership with Scioto County Aspire, is introducing two new free training programs designed to enhance professional development in the fields of behavior analysis and chemical dependency counseling.
The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) training and Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA) program will provide community members with valuable education and skills to support individuals with behavioral challenges and substance use disorders.
“We are proud to partner with Scioto County Aspire to bring these educational opportunities to Lawrence County and the surrounding area,” said Dr. Debbie Marinski, dean of Ohio University Southern. “These programs address critical workforce needs and provide residents with valuable career pathways that will ultimately improve outcomes for the individuals and communities we serve.”
The RBT program includes 40 hours of online coursework and six weeks of in-person training, providing participants with the knowledge required to pursue RBT certification. In addition to the online component, face-to-face sessions will take place on Tuesdays from Nov. 4–Dec. 10, 5:30–8:30 p.m., at OUS.
Participants will also have the opportunity to receive referrals to Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) who can guide them through the RBT certification process.
“This program is crucial for ensuring high-quality care and effective support for individuals with behavioral challenges, particularly those with autism,” said instructor Laura Holbrook. “These programs provide professionals with evidence-based strategies, promote consistency in intervention implementation, and enhance understanding of behavioral principles, enabling tailored approaches.”
The CDCA program offers 40 hours of online instruction, followed by three days of in-person, comprehensive training sessions, scheduled for Dec. 9, 10, and 11 from 5:30–9 p.m. at Ohio University Southern.
This program equips participants with the essential knowledge and skills to support clients struggling with substance use disorders, assisting licensed counselors, and enhancing the quality of care for those in recovery.
“This training equips assistants with essential knowledge and skills to support clients effectively, implement evidence-based practices, and assist licensed counselors, thereby improving treatment efficiency,” said Holbrook. “It emphasizes ethical practices, a holistic approach to recovery, and fosters career development, opening pathways for advancement in the addiction treatment field.”
Both programs have limited spots available—15 for the RBT program and 10 for the CDCA program. Interested individuals are encouraged to register early by calling 740.354.0219.
