HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Director of Athletics Christian Spears has been selected by the NCAA to serve on the NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infractions.
This select panel is an independent administrative body charged with deciding infractions cases involving NCAA member institutions and their employees.
“I’m genuinely honored to serve on the Division I Committee on Infractions,” Spears said. “Being a fact-finder, managing a judicial function, reviewing policy imposing penalties and ultimately upholding integrity and fairness is tremendously important to collegiate athletics.”
The panel is made up of personnel from NCAA conferences and member institutions, as well as esteemed individuals from the legal field in the general public, who deliberate on cases, as authorized by the NCAA bylaws, to determine infractions and subsequent penalties.
This includes oversight of all aspects of a case, including pre-hearing procedural matters, the hearing or review affiliated with a particular case, the assertion of violations and prescription of appropriate penalties for violations and the monitoring of institutions on probation to ensure compliance with penalties, including potential follow-up proceedings.
The committee is also the governing body for appeals of individuals subject to a show-cause order in Level III cases.
“Serving on this committee is vital function of the NCAA and I look forward to doing that work with my fellow committee members,” Spears said.
