Pancakes for a playground: Ironton Kiwanis club holds first pancake breakfast

Anyone driving by the Ironton First Church of the Nazarene on Fourth Street on Saturday was probably wondering what the heck was going on since there was a sheriff’s vehicle, an ambulance and a couple of fire truck behind orange safety cones.
There wasn’t an emergency, unless you were wanting breakfast and to help a good cause.
The first responders were there for the first pancake breakfast by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ironton since they formed. The vehicles, along with a bouncy castle, were just attractions for the kids to check out.
Sean Davis, president of the Kiwanis Club, said this was the first fundraising event since the club was chartered in October 2023.
“I would call it a success,” he said. “Things went smoothly, the church has been very helpful, the first responders showed up and it all went flawless with turnout of a good number of people.”
He said they fed a lot of people and got a lot of donations for their signature project, which is adding to the playground at the Open Door School in Coal Grove.
“They have playground need, they have playground but it is need of updates and additional equipment,” Davis said. “They serve all the county schools, but they don’t get the funding that other schools do. I think they have 80 some students.”
He said he talked to the staff at Open Door school and they discussed how there is only one swing and not a lot of interactive equipment.
“We’ve had a lot of support from local businesses,” Davis said.
Davis said they plan to do the pancake breakfast again as well as some other events.
“We have a lot of ideas to raise funds for children in the community,” he said.
The Kiwanis are also selling raffle tickets for college football games to raise funds.
Those interested in purchasing tickets for the Marshall-Ohio State game can get in on the drawing for $5 a chance for two seats—or five tickets for $20. The drawing is Sept. 3 for the Marshall-Ohio State game on Sept. 21.
Those interested in the Michigan-Ohio State game may purchase tickets for $10 a chance for two seats or five tickets for $40. The drawing is Nov. 10 and the game is Nov. 30.
Both games are at the Horseshoe in Columbus.
