Gilberta Beard Ferguson, 93, of Proctorville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 16, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert N. Beard and Fern Whitehead Beard of South Point.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, James (Jim) H. Ferguson, of South Point, whom she married on July 2, 1949.

Gilberta was a life member of Solida Missionary Baptist Church, where her husband was a deacon for 42 years.

They were active members in many church activities, including church camp and Vacation Bible School.

Gilberta was employed by South Point Local School District as the administrator of food services. Gilberta retired in 1992.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, C. Charles Beard, Thomas A. Beard; one sister, Elizabeth Jane Beard Tyree; and also, a great granddaughter.

She is survived by two sons, J. Chriss Ferguson, of Columbus, and Frederick N. Ferguson (Diane), of Verona, Kentucky; two daughters, I. Victoria Farley (John), of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and Anita Diane King (Kevin), of Ashland, Kentucky; and two sisters, Sally Marlene Beard Lester and Julia Ellen Beard Gibson.

“Granny” will be missed by six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, with Pastor Rock Dearfield officiating. Burial will follow in Highlawn Memorial Gardens, South Point.

Visitation will be noon–1 p.m. Thursday at Beard Mortuary, 3001 Third Ave., Huntington, West Virginia.
