MJ Wixsom: A little PT on road to recovery
Published 12:00 am Monday, December 11, 2023
The road to recovery often demands more than just physical stamina; it requires a spirit resilient enough to embrace the challenges that come with it.
As I sit here, two weeks and a day post-op from knee surgery, navigating this winding path to healing has been a journey in itself.
Physical therapy has become my constant companion, courtesy of the relentless efforts of Susan and Jennifer, who seem to believe that “no pain, no gain” is the anthem to live by.
They’ve handed me homework PT on my off days, demanding extra strides towards the finish line of recovery.
And speaking of strides, I’ve embarked on a peculiar virtual challenge – 680 miles through the enchanted realm of the Lord of the Rings. A mile logged for each PT accomplishment. Let’s face it, walking 680 miles on my own would remain a mere fantasy.
Napping has become a newfound pastime.
Sleep, once a sanctuary, now evades me in my own bed due to pain.
Driving remains a distant aspiration, as I navigate the roads of recovery one step at a time.
While my schedule has reduced appointments and complexities, it has been filled with ample moments for reflection.
I’ve devoured books voraciously, even managing to keep up with my book club’s selection – albeit being the one who suggested it in the first place.
Ice packs have become my loyal companions, joining me in this icy expedition toward healing.
Elevating my leg and frequent laps with the walker have become part of the daily regimen.
Progress, albeit gradual, is making its presence known.
A curious soul recently inquired if I regretted opting for surgery so early in my recovery journey.
My response was simple – it doesn’t matter. The decision was made, and now it’s about steering the course to ensure the recovery is as robust as possible.
Life often presents us with choices; we make the best decision with the information at hand and then press forward.
Moving forward is precisely what I’m determined to do.
It’s not just about regaining the mobility I once had; it’s about setting my sights on new horizons.
In my case, it’s the ambitious dream of trekking in Nepal to the base camp of Mount Everest.
This recovery isn’t just about repairing a knee; it’s about mending the spirit, fostering resilience, and embracing the journey towards a new chapter, where the summit of Everest might just be within reach.
So here I am, one foot in front of the other, stepping into the unknown, embracing the challenges, and celebrating the victories – big and small – along the way.
Because sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are the ones that demand the most perseverance.
Until next time, keep moving forward.
After all, it’s the only direction that matters.
