In a game that went down to the final out, the Rock Hill Redwomen held on to beat the South Point Lady Pointers 4-3 Thursday to clinch their second Ohio Valley Conference championship.

“It was an exciting game. Both teams played well,” said Rock Hill coach Mary Jane Harper.

“We stepped up when we had to. Our young kids stepped up, our senior (Nicole Stamper) got a big sacrifice fly and we had the big double play in the seventh.”

Rock Hill is 14-2 overall and 9-0 in the OVC. The Redwomen have a game to complete with Chesapeake and are leading 7-1.

South Point is now 13-3 and 7-2 in the league.

The Lady Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Ashley Goodall singled, Rachel Murnahan put down a sacrifice, Hannah Carey was safe on an error and Goodall scored on a wild pitch.

The lead went to 2-0 in the fifth when Sarah McCallister was hit by a pitch, Kayla Fletcher had a sacrifice bunt and Katelynn Leonard singled.

Rock Hill then scored all four of its runs in the sixth.

Chelsea Harper reached on a fielder’s choice and Brooke Hanshaw doubled her home. Morgan Schug followed with an RBI single and Dani Crabtree singled to put runners on the corners.

Crabtree stole second and Nicole Stamper hit a sacrifice fly. Brooke Eastham then doubled home Crabtree with what proved to be the winning run.

But the Lady Pointers wouldn’t quit.

In the bottom of the seventh, Carey, Brianna Whaley and Fletcher singled to make it 4-3. After a strike out, pitcher Sami Nixon fielded a comebacker and threw to Chelsea Harper at second base for a force out.

Harper then threw home to catcher Brooke Eastham who tagged the runner out trying to score to complete the game-ending double play.

Nixon struck out seven and did not walk a batter to get the win. Kaitlyn Brown fanned six and walked two in taking the loss.
