The Symmes Valley head coach was more impressed with the Vikings’ defense that the offense after rolling to a doubleheader win over the Portsmouth Clay Panthers on Saturday, 16-4 and 17-2.

“We’ve got the bats going pretty good, but we’re playing defense and that’s the main thing. Good pitching stops good hitting so you have to be able to catch it,” said Renfroe.

The Vikings had 13 hits in the first game as Luke Taylor picked up the win. Taylor struck out 10, walked three and allowed five hits.

The Vikings got a run in the first inning when Nathan Dockery singled, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Alec Herrell’s base hit.

The Vikings erupt for 11 in the second inning to blow the game open.

Jacob Patterson had a two-run double, Cody Myers singled in a run, Dockery doubled in a run and Evan Herrell an RBI single.

The lead went to 13-0 when Alec Herrell walked, Dillon Pelletier singled, the runner’s moved up on a ground out and Jordan Fulford hit sacrifice fly.

Patterson hit a two-run homer in the fourth as the Vikings got three more runs.

In the second game, Clay pitchers walked 11 batters to go with 12 Symmes Valley hits in the 17-2 win.

Dockery got the win as he pitched a three-hitter.

After a scoreless first inning two runs scored in the second inning.

Alec Herrell reached third base on two errors and scored on a fielder’s choice. Zach Runyon walked, Corey Brown singled him to third where he scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Vikings had another big inning as they scored nine runs in the third on four hits, four walks and two hit batsmen.
