Council to consider dumping rule changes

The Ironton City Council will consider an ordinance Thursday that, if passed, would change the city’s rules concerning dumping trash at the municipal garage.
The city currently allows residents to dispose of material twice a week at the city garage and the landfill. Residents are required to show proof of their residency.
Mayor Rich Blankenship proposed the rule changes at a February meeting of the council finance committee.
Blankenship told the committee that as it is, dumping at the city garage is a tremendous cost to the city. People who live outside of Ironton take advantage of it and use residents’ water bills to dump, he said. Contractors, too, dump their construction material at the garage for free, he said.
If passed, the following rules would be implemented:
•The city would accept materials at the garage once a week on Monday from noon to 3 p.m. from residents who provide proof of their residency along with a valid driver’s license and photo ID.
• Construction material will not be accepted at the garage.
• Residents and landlord owners of property in Ironton are limited to one pickup truckload per month.
• Residents may also be permitted to take debris to the landfill excluding construction material if they provide proof of their residency and a valid driver’s license and photo ID.
The following items are also on the agenda:
• A resolution authorizing the approval of the contract for services with the Ironton-Lawrence County Area Community Action Organization
• A resolution authorizing and directing the mayor to extend the current contract with Grubb and Ellis West Shell commercial marketing company to market the Ironton Iron Property.
• A resolution opposing the closure of the Ohio River Valley Youth Center in Franklin Furnace.
The Ironton City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Ironton City Center.
