SOUTH POINT — This Saturday, the public has an opportunity to get a little healthier and help the American Cancer Society at the same time.
From 10 a.m. until noon, people can participate in a Zumbathon at the South Point Board of Education building. The suggested donation is $5, but any donation will be appreciated, and all donations will go to the American Cancer Society.
Collins Career Center will be offering health screenings, checking blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. There will also be door prizes provided by area businesses and bottled water provided by Forth’s Foodfair.
Elkins described Zumba as dancing and a good cardio workout, along with strengthening, all done with a Latin theme.
“It targets every area,” she said. “In one work – amazing.”
While the Zumbathon is two hours long, Elkins said it doesn’t mean you have to do it for two hours.
“You do as much of it as you can tolerate,” she said. “It’s constant Zumba and it’s a blast.”
She said 12 different instructors will be there, taking turns with different routines.
The Zumbathon is open to the public and no reservations or experience required.
“Just come and do whatever you can. Do a song, sit down, listen to the next and take a break, and get up and do the next one,” Elkins said. “
For Elkins, helping out the American Cancer Society is a personal thing.
“I go to Zumba and my instructor and I set it up,” said Vickie Elkins, of South Point. “I have a Relay for Life team to raise money for the American Cancer Society.”
Elkins lost her father-in-law to esophageal cancer three years ago and became involved with Relay for Life the year after he passed away.
“I think everybody‘s been affected by cancer in one way or another,” she said.
“I’d love to see a lot of people turn out and hope everyone has a blast.”
