Although two young girls continue their difficult battle with the same debilitating disease, both — and the supporters who rally around them — serve as an inspiration to all of us.

These two Lawrence Countians have sort of become the face of cystic fibrosis in our area.

Nine-year-old Raegan Holley from Chesapeake has shown great courage in dealing with her disease, offering great lessons from which all of us could benefit.

Ironton’s Bethany Bibb has done the same.

Family and friends of both girls have shown what love and compassion can do when combined with a good cause.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects both male and female infants. It affects the lungs and digestive system. Currently about 30,000 children and adults in the U.S. have cystic fibrosis with about 70,000 cases worldwide.

A variety of fundraisers are bringing the community together and helping open doors for these young women as they fight back against this disease.

But, most important, both girls are trying to raise money and awareness that could have an impact for generations to come.

For that they are recognized in our “Good News, Good Neighbors” spotlight this week.

Sometimes even the youngest of us can provide examples for which we can all live by.
