PROCTORVILLE — When spring is nigh, can the landslides of Lawrence County be far away?

That’s what has kept the crews of the County Engineer’s Office occupied as they spent Tuesday cleaning up two slides in the eastern end of the county.

“It’s from the heavy rains and wet condition over the wintertime,” Engineer Doug Cade said. “It is pretty much a common occurrence in Lawrence County.”

Crews spent the morning repairing a slide that had partially closed a segment of County Road 2, or Greasy Ridge, about a quarter of a mile south of the Windsor Township Fire Station.

“We are getting that repaired until we can make a permanent repair this spring,” Cade said. “It dropped down about a foot and covered the road about one and a half lanes.”

In the afternoon the crews were out at County Road 64 or Venisonham Camp Road.

“We had a landslide due to heavy rains and saturated soil,” Cade said. “We lost about a lane of roadway there.”

Right now the crews worked on temporary repair work.

“(Permanent work) will be later this spring,” he said. “Partly because we have several other projects to get to.”

Cade has yet to determine the cost for repairing the roadways.

The engineer’s office is also working on a plan to clear out a logjam on Reeves Creek.

“That is causing the roadway to wash away,” Cade said. “We are trying to find a solution to get that fixed. It will take some larger equipment than we have. Hopefully, within a week or two we will get that fixed.”
