ACTC names 460 to dean’s list
ASHLAND, Ky. — Ashland Community and Technical College has named 37 Ohio residents to the dean’s list for Fall semester 2010.
Dean’s list students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) on at least 12 credit hours in courses numbered 100 and above. The students are listed below by city of residence.

New book club meets Thursday
ASHLAND, Ky. — Let’s Get Graphic!, Boyd County Public Library’s newest book club, looks at origin stories when it next meets on Thursday.
Let’s Get Graphic! is a new monthly discussion group, meeting on the last Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave.
Origin stories are the back stories that reveal how characters or teams gained their superpowers and/or the circumstances under which they became superheroes, or super bad guys.
Each month will focus on a different author or type of graphic novel, and club members help pick the topics. For more information on Let’s Get Graphic!, contact Adam Chandler at (606) 329-0090.

W.Va. mom accused of filming kids smoking cigarettes
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Cabell County woman faces charges of giving cigarettes to her 6-year-old son and an eight-year-old neighbor and using a cell phone to shoot video of them smoking.
Media outlets report that 44-year-old Theresa Ann McCallister is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Friday.
Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas says McCallister is charged with child neglect and contributing to juvenile delinquency.
According to criminal complaints, McCallister also is accused of allowing the boys to use the cigarettes to set off fireworks at her house. Her son suffered a burned finger. The incidents occurred Jan. 29.
A telephone listing for McCallister couldn’t be found.
SSU celebrates women’s history month
PORTSMOUTH — In March, Shawnee State University will be celebrating Women’s History Month with several featured speakers and activities.
On Tuesday, March 1, Jessica Valenti, author of “He’s a Stud, She’s a Slut: … and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know” is the featured speaker of the 2011 Leslie Williams Symposium and part of the Jane M. G. Foster Distinguished Lecture Series at 7 p.m. in the main theater of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
Assistant Professor of English and Humanities Thomas Piontek will give a historical overview of the “Three Waves of Feminism” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8 in the University Center, Room 214.
The Eighth Annual Read In will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9 in Clark Memorial Library’s Alcove. The Read In will honor female writers with people sharing excerpts from works by favorite authors their own favorite pieces.
Snacks will be provided but people are also encouraged to bring their lunches while listening to the readings.
The film “Iron Jawed Angels” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 in the Flohr Lecture Hall. The movie is a 2004 film about the American women’s suffrage movement during the 1920s, starring Hillary Swank. Learn about how political activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns used peaceful and effective strategies to revolutionize the American Feminist movement to grant women the right to vote.
The last speaker of the month, Ginny Young, a doctoral candidate in history at West Virginia University, will give a lecture, “There Isn’t a Darn Thing About This Job a Woman Can’t Do,” on various ways some women resisted gender segregation in the mid-20th century workplace.
