What exactly makes up a liberal or conservative?

Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights.
They believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems.
Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. They believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals.
Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. I would like to present the difference between the two before moving on and as most can see there are both positives and negatives with both.
Those that believe in the concept of a liberal want the someone else to make decisions for them this is the difference in liberals and conservatives that expect each person to take personal responsibility to make choices for themselves.
This is where the difference lies in those that expect government to provide care for them and those who believe they can make decisions for themselves and this is what our nation has been founded upon those that can make decisions or themselves and what we have fought and died for since the beginning of our nation.
Now some want to revert back to the times when the government completely took care of our needs and we had no choice in the decisions made much like those in the Middle East and communist countries.
It seems that Egypt has taken a major step toward overthrowing those that have oppressed them for so long and now want some form of democracy.
