On Thursday, it was announced that the village of South Point will be receiving $200,000 in funding from the state for the purpose of improving its community center.

The building, which was constructed in 1973, is a popular venue for celebrations and events in the village. But, as time has passed, it has grown outdated. For instance, its entrance is not fully accessible to those with disabilities and its restrooms are in need of an upgrade.

Mayor Jeff Gaskin, working with State Rep. Jason Stephens and State Sen. Bob Peterson was able to secure the allocation from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and it will be put to good use, giving the facility an overhaul, with hopes that it will be ready for next year’s July 4th celebration.

We commend these three officials for their effort, which shows that collaboration across all levels of government can pay off for small municipalities across the state.

People for the Point’s annual Fourth of July festivities were canceled this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully, next year, it can return and the event can serve not just as a holiday celebration but also the unveiling of a building that will get much use from the community.
