For all its hype and criticism, American Idol” actually embodies the American dream and the American spirit.

The popular talent search television show is entering its 10th year, garnering mixed reviews from viewers after shake ups on the judging panel and the format.

But, beneath all the glamour and made-for-TV glitz the show speaks to many of the characteristics that make our nation and our citizens the greatest in the world.

At its heart, the show is about reaching for your dreams and finding the perseverance to pursue it even in the face of adversity.

Many contestants have to face many challenges and much adversity before they achieve even a modicum of success.

Franklin Furnace resident Allen Lewis is a perfect example.

The 26-year-old grabbed attention locally last week when his audition was aired on the FOX show.

Even though the judges didn’t send him through, Lewis says he is committed to his dream and will work harder than ever to achieve it.

Isn’t that the spirit that our nation was founded upon?

Whether it is becoming a rock star, putting a man on the moon or building a better life for your family, the foundation of the American dream is built on hard work and never giving up.

So, while “American Idol” may look like just a platform to launch the next sugar-coated pop star, it is actually a symbol for so much more.
