A Lawrence County man has been arrested and charged in the 2009 murder of a Sciotoville man. Calvin Kersey, 23, of 95 Private Drive, Ironton, was arrested Jan. 24 on two counts of aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery and three counts of felonious assault.
Kersey’s co-defendant is Larry I. Delawder, 26, whom a Scioto County jury found guilty Feb. 18, 2010, of the murder of Jotham Lee Parker, 27. Delawder is serving a life sentence for the crime.
Parker died after being stabbed in the head Dec. 5, 2009. Detective Jim Charles of the Portsmouth Police Department said the men, who are cousins, were attempting to break into Parker’s truck at a bar when the victim tried to stop him.
Kersey was indicted with the murder charges on the same day that Delawder was, though Kersey was not apprehended for the crime until last week.
A third person, Heather Parrish, was charged and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice relating to the case. Parrish served 50 days in jail and was placed on community-controlled sanctions for three years.
Kersey was arraigned Friday in Judge Howard Harcha III’s courtroom. Harcha also heard Delawder’s case. Kersey pleaded not guilty.
According to records from the Lawrence County Clerk of Court. Kersey had been sentenced to four years of community-controlled sanctions in April of 2009 for a drug trafficking charge. Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said Kersey was arrested when he showed up for an appointment with his probation officer.
Captain John Murphy of the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office said deputies from the Lawrence County arrested Kersey and transported him to the Scioto County line, where the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office transported him to jail in Scioto County.
Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn, who tried Delawder’s case, said he is glad Kersey was arrested and that he would have liked to have tried him when Delawder was tried.
“Anytime you’ve got someone charged in a serious case we like to try to get them picked up on those charges so we can see the case go forward,” Kuhn said.
Kersey is being held at the Scioto County Jail on a $300,000 cash or surety bond.
A pretrial hearing has yet to be scheduled. Reached Monday, Kersey’s defense attorney Gene Meadows declined to comment.
