Hope for conflict to end

On Friday, the Taliban and the United States agreed to a weeklong “reduction in violence,” which will, hopefully, lead to the signing of a peace agreement on Feb. 29 and bring an end to the war in Afghanistan after 18 years.
According to reports, the peace talks have been going on for several months and broke down more than once.
Both sides have a lot to gain from the peace treaty. When Donald Trump was running for president in 2016, he said one of his goals was to bring the troops home from Afghanistan. And the Taliban is looking to gain legitimacy in the eyes of the world and to get foreign troops out of its country.
The path to peace won’t be easy as some Islamic and al-Qaida forces have not committed to the peace process and are likely to continue to fight.
After nearly two decades, the time has come for this war to end in a land that hasn’t seen peace for a generation.
Let’s hope that all those fighting can agree to that.
