PORTSMOUTH — The Chesapeake Panthers can score. They can also play a little defense, too.
The Panthers held the Portsmouth Trojans to just one point in the first quarter as they rolled to an 80-37 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday.
Chesapeake raced to an 11-0 lead to start the game and Portsmouth did not score until Matthew Fraulini hit a foul shot with 24 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Panthers built a 23-3 lead with 4:55 left in the first half. Jessie Dixon hit a 3-pointer with 4:35 left in the second quarter for the Trojans first field goal of the game.
Ethan Taylor had 11 points in the second quarter and 15 in the half as the Panthers were up 30-17 at the break.
Trent Dearth scored 8 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake outscored Portsmouth 26-12 to take an insurmountable 56-29 lead.
Taylor finished with 20 points to lead the Panthers (3-0, 2-0). Levi Blankenship scored 13 points and Austin Jackson got 12 points.
Travis Grim and Josh Cox had 7 rebounds each. Levi Blankenship handed out 6 assists and Cox had six steals.
Drew Roe scored 11 points to lead Portsmouth (1-3, 0-2).
On Tuesday, Portsmouth will host Fairland.
Chesapeake’s game with Ironton has been postponed and rescheduled for Jan 24.
