COAL GROVE — Together we can. In fact, we had to.

Playing without starting forward Will McCollister, the Rock Hill Redmen came together and beat the Coal Grove Hornets 44-35 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

McCollister — one of the team’s top rebounders and scorers — was out of town and unable to play. Redmen coach Bob Wilds said everyone else stepped up their game to fill the void.

“Everybody just picked it up. We played well as a team. We passed the ball and found the open guy. We had six guys score from 11 to five points,” said Wilds.

Devin Darby had 11 points and seven rebounds to pace Rock Hill (4-4, 1-1). Mitchell Patterson and Andy Knipp added eight points each while Shane Russell and Trey Wilds had four assists each.

Rye Goodwin scored 12 points to pace Coal Grove (2-8, 0-2).

“We did a good job limiting them to one shot. Mitchell Patterson did a nice job defensively on (Devin) Monnier,” said Wilds.

The game was tied 6-6 after the first quarter.

Knipp scored six points and Patterson four in the second quarter as Rock Hill took an 18-15 halftime lead.

Goodwin scored five points in the third quarter as the Hornets cut the deficit to 30-28. Five different players scored for the Redmen in the quarter.

Jonathan Schwab scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter and Darby added three more as Rock Hill began to pull away.
