Dragons rally past Pointers for 13th win

PROCTORVILLE — Whose says 13 is an unlucky number.
The Fairland Dragons used a comeback in the late innings for get their 13th straight win of the season as they edged the South Point Pointers 6-4 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Fairland is now 13-1 overall and 9-0 in the OVC.
Meanwhile, South Point (7-8) suffered yet another tough loss.
“We played well tonight. Fairland just hit the ball well to outscore us,” said South Point coach Larry Goodwin. “They are a good-hitting team.
“It seems like we are in a close game every day. But I am starting to see improvement in our young guys. We are a blue-collar team and we work hard every day.”
Fairland’s Garrett Looney and South Point’s Brody Blackwell locked up in a tight pitching matchup.
Looney struck out seven, walked two and gave up four earned runs in going the distance for the win.
Looney also helped himself by going 2-3 with a home run and an RBI.
Blackwell fanned five, walked only one and four of the six runs were earned as he took the loss.
South Point took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Drew Smith, Ben Walls, Blackwell and Drake McClure all singled for two runs and Brycen McCann hit a sacrifice fly.
Fairland got two runs back in the bottom of the inning.
Gavin Hunt reached on an error and scored on Dacoda Chapman’s triple. Tucker Adkins followed with an RBI single.
The Dragons tied the game in the second when Looney hit a solo home run leading off the inning.
The Pointers went up 4-3 with a run in the fourth when Smith walked, stole second on Walls’ base hit.
The Dragons tied the game in the fifth when Hunt singled and scored on two errors.
Fairland broke the tie with two runs in the sixth.
With one out, Looney and Defoe both singled and scored on a triple by Brennan West.
Walls was 3-4, Smith 2-3 and Blackwell 2-4 as the Pointers got 10 hits.
West was 2-3 with two RBI as Fairland had nine hits.
