Last week, elementary schools in Lawrence County and around the nation took part in Read Across America Week.

The celebration marks the anniversary of the birth of children’s author Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, and events throughout the week are aimed at increasing reading among students.

This can include book fairs, themed dress-up days or, as was the case at Dawson-Bryant Elementary, guest readers.

Each of the school’s classrooms received a visit from community figures, including Ironton Municipal Judge Kevin Waldo, Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Christen Finley, Ironton Fire Chief Mike Mahlmeister and Coal Grove Mayor Larry McDaniel and his wife, Vicki, of the Coal Grove Betterment Club.

Each of these guests read one of Seuss’ books to the students in what is the third year of the event.

It was a great display of community spirit and gave the children a chance to get to know those who serve the region.

Meanwhile, at Chesapeake Elementary, principal Trisha Harris was on the receiving end of the school’s annual reading challenge.

Students who met their goals got to dump water over her, followed by the teachers of the leading classrooms dousing her with buckets full of water.

From getting slimed to pies in the face, Harris is always a good sport each year with the challenge.

We commend the schools for organizing these events each year. Not only is it a fun week for the children, but it is a great motivator to get them to pick up and enjoy a good book.
