Harvest for the Hungry pantry had annual giveaway Tuesday
Harvest for the Hungry food pantry in Ironton had its annual Thanksgiving dinner giveaway on Tuesday, providing a holiday meal for local families in need.
Diane Porter, director of Harvest for the Hungry, said the food pantry provides all of the essentials for a Thanksgiving dinner, including turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls and cake.
The food pantry received more than 100 turkeys from the South Hills Longbeards chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and purchased around 400 turkeys from Facing Hunger Food Bank in Huntington.
Porter said residents signed up to be able to pick up food from the pantry back in October, and that the event provides for about 500 people.
Harvest for the Hungry volunteers, as well as students from Sugar Creek Christian Academy, assisted with the giveaway.
Harvest for the Hungry food pantry, located at 120 N. Fifth St., Ironton, has been in operation since 1992, and provides food to low-income families in Lawrence County throughout the year.
