Dawson-Bryant sixth grader Marlee Malone, 11, has a love for animals, and for the past two years has organized donation drives for the Lawrence County Animal Shelter.

“I set up a donation drive at my school, for people to be able to donate leashes, collars, toys, bleach and other cleaning supplies,” Malone said. “And spare change, whatever they are able to donate.”

In addition, Malone set up a GoFundMe account for the shelter earlier this year, which raised a total of $562 that was donated to the shelter through 16 donors.

The top three donors were Greg Klaiber, and Lawrence County Commissioners DeAnna Holliday and Freddie Hayes Jr., who were all at the shelter this past Friday to deliver the check.

“Kids are doing so many great things in our community, and we can learn a lot from these young people,” Holliday said. “I know Marlee cares so much for our furry friends, and what she’s doing to help out is really amazing.”

Items in need include blankets, dog and cat food, newspapers, cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, as well as monetary donations.

Besides the drive going on at Dawson-Bryant Middle School, anyone wishing to donate to the Lawrence County Animal Shelter can drop off at the following locations:

• Holliday’s Quick Stop, 3302 State Route 243, Ironton

• Generations Quick Stop: 2986 State Route 93, Ironton

• Buckeye Monument: 2409 S. Third St., Ironton

The deadline for Malone’s animal shelter drive is Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The Lawrence County Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter that adopts out dogs and cats, and works with more than 50 rescues throughout the United States and Canada. Anyone in Lawrence County interested in adopting an animal from the shelter can do so for $30 per dog and $15 per cat or kitten.
