PEDRO — It was a battle and when the smoke cleared the St. Joseph Lady Flyers had survived.
In a hard-fought soccer game, the Lady Flyers beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 6-3 on Thursday.
“I tip my hat to Rock Hill,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Dan Blair. “They played hard and were great hosts. They showed great sportsmanship.”
Emma Whaley put on an offensive show but she was far from a one-man show.
Whaley scored four goals including three in the first half to lead the Lady Flyers.
But St. Joseph had five different players register assists as Chloe Sheridan, Kaitlyn Sheridan, Bella Whaley, Laiken Unger and Emilee Blankenship all had a hand — or foot — in the scoring.
Chloe Sheridan also had two second half goals.
Rock Hill got goals from Ashlie Howard, Makayla Scott and Lucy Simpson.
Emma Whaley scored two minutes into the game before Howard tied the game.
But Whaley had two more goals to close out the half and St. Joseph led 3-1.
Scott scored to start the second half scoring as Rock Hill cut the deficit to 3-2.
But two goals by Sheridan and one more by Emma Whaley put the lead at 6-2.
Simpson got a goal on a penalty kick at the 83-minute mark to complete the scoring.
St. Joseph goalkeeper Kelsey Malone had three saves. Goalkeeper Grace Stevens had three saves for Rock Hill.
St. Joseph 3 3 = 6
Rock Hill 1 2 = 3
