SOUTH POINT — With the defenses dominating, the South Point Lady Pointers needed some intangible.
They got it.
The Lady Pointers fought through the heat and reached down deep for some extra grit as they edged the Rock Hill Redwomen 1-0 in an Ohio Valley Conference soccer game on Tuesday.
The game was scoreless in the first half and the Lady Pointers didn’t score the game’s only goal until the 72-minute mark of the second half.
Lady Pointers’ coach Zach Jenkins said his team started well but began to play “flat and lazy” after the first 15 minutes.
“Coming out of the half, I challenged the girls that someone had to step up and be a leader and battle through the heat with some mental toughness,” said Jenkins.
“The girls responded well to me getting onto them a bit and stepped their intensity level and urgency up.”
With time running out, Kylee Ellison scored with an assist from Neele Bennje.
“Neele made a great extra pass off of a nice through ball from Emilee Whitt and Kylee was able to drive it into the corner of the goal. Rock Hill’s defense was much improved tonight I thought. We scored five goals on them out at their place and we really struggled to get good opportunities tonight,” said Jenkins.
South Point is now 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the OVC.
“Overall, I’m really pleased that we were able to get out of there with a win and keep our OVC homes alive,” said Jenkins.
“The girls know we need some help to achieve that goal now but they are battling to keep those hopes alive.”
