Keeping children safe

School is back in session in Lawrence County and, with students catching the bus and walking to classes, we urge drivers to be extra cautious on the road.

Here are some tips from the National Safety Council for road safety.

• Do not block crosswalks when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. This forces  pedestrians to go around you and into the path of moving traffic

• If flashers are blinking in a school zone, stop and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.

• Be sure to always stop for school patrol officers or crossing guards holding stop signs.

• Never pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians.

• Never pass school buses from behind, or from either direction, on an undivided road if it is stopped to load or unload children.

• If yellow or red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended on a bus, traffic must stop.

• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children. Stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit.
